When you make a list of all the unique things Louisiana has to offer visitors, you quickly see the long-lasting influences of our French, Spanish and African ancestry.

In fact, there's not another state, save Hawaii, that has preserved its past with a living history that can be experienced each and every day through the lives of its local population. Our own style of architecture - wrought iron balconies and port coheres of the French Quarter, plantation homes along the Mississippi River and raised cottages found through out Cajun Country are being built and rebuilt to this very day.

Much attention is paid to Louisiana's roots music and folk art, but it doesn't tell the whole story. The truth is Louisiana has a history of being a center of the performance and creation of fine arts. From operas and symphonies to classical ballets and works of art, you'll find superb examples of the fine arts in Louisiana.

New Orleans has been home to countless artists, from Degas to Michalopoulos, so it's not surprising that the state has long enjoyed a vibrant art scene.

Louisiana Art & Science Museum

Housed in a historic railroad depot on the banks of the Mississippi River, the Louisiana Art & Science Museum offers educational entertainment for visitors of all ages. The art galleries showcase changing fine art exhibitions and selections from the permanent collection.

In the interactive art and science galleries designed just for children, creative and enlightening fun comes in many forms. The Ancient Egypt Gallery houses ancient artifacts and a Ptolemaic-era mummy that rests in a re-created rock-cut tomb.

The Irene W. Pennington Planetarium features sky shows, large-format films, visual music shows, and galleries devoted to space science. In the Museum Store at LASM, visitors enjoy shopping for unique handcrafted merchandise, books, toys, and a large selection of objects related to LASM's exhibits.

LASM serves the community through lectures, workshops, classes, teacher inservices, camps, and other programming. The museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers.

LASM is located at 100 River Road South in downtown Baton Rouge.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

What is Jazz Fest?

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, a/k/a Jazz Fest, is a 10-day cultural feast in which thousands of musicians, cooks and craftspeople welcome 400,000 visitors each year. The Louisiana Heritage Fair showcases unforgettable music on multiple stages, delicious Louisiana cuisine in two large food areas, and crafts artisans from the region and around the world demonstrating and selling their work. The Louisiana Heritage Fair is held at the Fair Grounds Race Course over the course of 2 weekends.

The Festival celebrates the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana, so the music encompasses every style associated with the city and the state: blues, R&B, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Afro-Caribbean, folk, Latin, rock, rap, country, bluegrass and everything in between. And of course there is lots of jazz, both contemporary and traditional.

The Heritage Fair takes place at the Fair Grounds Race Course, centrally located at 1751 Gentilly Boulevard, 10 minutes from the French Quarter.
